Coombs is a crossroads village on Highway 4A, inland from Parksville, with rural roads running off it in every direction. Most of the homes around it are on their own lots, away from any curb and gutter. That changes one thing about gutter cleaning that town homeowners never think about: where the water goes once it leaves the roof.
On a city street, a downspout usually drops into a pipe that joins the storm sewer, and once the water is underground it is the municipality’s problem. Out here, it is yours. So on a Coombs job we pay as much attention to the bottom of each downspout as we do to the trough at the top.
Four ways a Coombs downspout ends
Rural lots like these usually send downspout water one of four ways, and each one fails in its own way.
- A splash pad or elbow at grade. Simple and easy to check. The usual trouble is a pad that has sunk or shifted, so the water runs back toward the foundation.
- A pipe out to a ditch. Works well until the ditch end fills with silt or gets grown over, and then the pipe backs up to the downspout.
- A rock pit or soakaway. Water drains into gravel buried in the yard. Over the years fine debris washed down from the gutter clogs the gravel and the pit drains slower and slower.
- A rain barrel or tank. The gutter feeds a barrel, and the overflow from the barrel is often the part nobody planned.
We flush each downspout and watch the water at the bottom. If it disappears into the ground and does not come back up, good. If it bubbles out of the joint or the elbow fills and stays full, the blockage is below ground, and we tell you plainly. We do not dig up or clear underground lines.

The small roofs that get skipped
The main roof is the one everyone remembers. The ones that cause the most nuisance are often smaller: a covered porch over the front steps, a carport beside the house, a lean-to roof over firewood or a workbench. Their gutters are short and their outlets narrow.
When you ask for a quote, list them. We clean them in the same visit and flush their downspouts too, and it takes a fraction of the time the main roof does.
Clean trough, clean water
Why the fuss about the top of the system? Because whatever stays in the gutter ends up in the pipe. Needles and grit left sitting in the trough wash down with the next rain and settle in elbows, buried pipes and rock pits. A properly cleaned gutter, scooped by hand and then flushed until the water runs clear, sends less of that into the parts of the system nobody can see.

Got questions?
Questions from Coombs homeowners
Our downspout goes into a pipe in the ground. Can you clear that pipe?
No. We clear and flush the downspout itself, down to where it meets the buried pipe, and we watch whether the water goes away or backs up. If it backs up, the underground line is blocked and we tell you so. Clearing a buried line is a different trade, and we do not do it.
The carport gutter is tiny. Is it worth cleaning?
Usually, yes. Small gutters on carports, porches and lean-to roofs have small outlets, so a handful of needles is enough to stop them. They also tend to sit right over a walkway or a door, which is where an overflow is most annoying. We include them in the quote if you list them.
Do you need us at home while you work?
No. All of the work happens outside. If you will be out, leave the gates unlatched and tell us about pets and any downspouts that run into a buried pipe. We flush those and watch whether they drain. We send you a message when the job is finished.
How often do gutters on a treed Coombs lot need cleaning?
Most houses here do well with one thorough clean a year, after the leaves are down in late fall. Under bigleaf maple or overhanging fir, add a spring visit. We will tell you which kind of house you have after the first visit.
Our downspout feeds a rain barrel that overflows onto the path. Is that the gutter?
Sometimes. If needles are packed in the downspout or the inlet screen, water backs up and spills before it ever reaches the barrel. If the barrel fills and its own overflow lets go onto the path, the gutter is doing its job and the water just needs somewhere better to go. We flush the downspout, watch the flow into the barrel and tell you plainly which it is. If the fix is a change to the downspout, we can quote it as a repair. The barrel itself stays with you.
