The long view on guards

Gutter Guards, Judged After a Few Winters

Any guard looks good on fitting day. What matters is how it behaves after a few wet winters under fir and cedar or in salt wind off the water. Here is what we see.

On the day a gutter guard goes on, every product looks the same: a neat line along the eave and an empty gutter underneath. The real difference between guards shows a few winters later, under Oceanside trees and weather. We clean and service a lot of guarded gutters, so we see them at every age. This page follows a guarded gutter through five winters, because that is the most honest way to decide whether one is right for your roof.

Before fitting: the gutter has to be worth it

A guard sits on top of the gutter you already have. If that gutter is sagging between hangers, weeping at the corners or pulling away from soft fascia, a guard adds a little weight to an existing problem and makes it harder to see. We clean every run, flush the downspouts and look at the hangers first. Sometimes the honest advice is a repair before the guard, and sometimes it is no guard at all.

After the first winter

In the first year most guards do their job well. Leaves from bigleaf maple and ornamental trees sit on top, dry out and blow off. The gutter underneath stays mostly clear.

What you start to see under Douglas fir and western red cedar is the needles. Short fir needles stand on end and slip through coarse screens and the slots of perforated covers. Cedar sprays lie flat on top of the guard and begin to hold water. On a waterfront roof, the first winter of wind is also the first test of the fixings. A guard that was clipped on loosely can lift at one end in a strong southeast storm.

After three years

By the third winter the guards tell you which type they are. Fine mesh under heavy fir will have a layer of needles and grit lying on it, sometimes starting to green over with moss in shady spots. Rain still gets through as long as the mat is thin, but in heavy rain water can run across a thick mat and over the edge.

Coarser guards will have let enough through that the gutter underneath needs a clean of its own. Foam inserts are usually the worst by now: needles and seed lodge in the foam, it holds water, and in places plants have started to grow in it.

Near the water, plain steel screws and clips may show the first rust stains. The guard is still doing its job, but the fixings are working loose.

After five years

By five winters, a well-fitted fine mesh under moderate trees is often still doing what it was bought for: it has saved several ladder visits, and a light clean of the top and a rinse underneath bring it back. Under heavy fir, the same guard has saved fewer visits, but the visits it does need are quicker and less messy.

A loose or coarse guard at five years is often worse than no guard. Debris has packed underneath, the gutter cannot be cleaned without taking the guard off, and the owner may not know there is a problem until water runs down the wall. These are the gutters we lift guards from and clear by hand.

What the five years add up to

Guards change the calendar more than they change the job. If your gutters fill twice a year under tall fir and cedar, a fine mesh, properly fixed, can stretch that out a good deal. If they fill once a year under a single maple, a yearly clean is probably the better use of your money. If you live in Qualicum Beach or along the Parksville shore and have decided you are done with ladders, guards can be part of that decision, but someone still needs to look at them on a regular basis. See gutter maintenance for how that can be arranged.

When we fit them

We clean the gutters first, flush every downspout while it is still open, and fix the guard to the gutter so it stays put in the wind off the Strait. Where the house is close to salt water, we choose fixings that suit it. We will also tell you plainly when a guard is not worth it. The quote is free, the crew has more than ten years on Vancouver Island rooflines, and the work carries our guarantee.

Got questions?

Gutter guard questions

Will gutter guards mean I never have to clean my gutters again?

No. Guards cut down how often the gutters need attention, sometimes a lot. They do not end it. Fine needles, grit and moss still find their way in, and debris collects on top of the guard.

Plan on a check and clean every year or two, depending on the trees.

Which type of guard works best under Douglas fir?

A fine stainless or aluminum mesh, held firmly in place, copes best with fir and cedar needles. Coarser screens and perforated covers let short needles through, and foam inserts tend to trap them.

I live right on the water. Will salt air affect the guards?

It works on any plain steel screws and clips over time. We use fixings that suit a salt-air location and check them at each clean.

The mesh itself usually outlasts the fixings.

Can you put guards on my old gutters?

Sometimes. If the gutter is sagging, leaking at the seams or pulling off the fascia, a guard adds weight to a problem. We tell you if the gutter should be repaired first, or whether it is not worth guarding at all.

I already have guards and the gutters still overflow. What is going on?

Usually debris has packed under the guard, or a mat of needles has built up on top and water runs straight over it. We can lift the guards, clear underneath and refit them.

Do you clean gutters that have guards fitted by someone else?

Yes. We clear the top, lift the sections we can safely remove, clean underneath and put them back. If a guard type cannot come off without damage, we tell you before we start.
