People often ask us what actually happens on the day. It is a fair question when someone is about to be on ladders around your home. Here is a typical house visit in Parksville, Qualicum Beach or anywhere else in Oceanside, from the time we pull up to the time we leave.

Before we get there

A few small things make the visit go better. Turn the outside tap on if it has been shut off for the winter, because we use it to flush the downspouts. Leave any side gates open or unlatched. Move a car that is parked tight under the eave, and pull patio chairs or pots away from the walls where a ladder would need to stand. If you have a dog, let us know where it will be.

You do not need to be home. Many of our customers are at work, out for the day or away for the season, and as long as we can get round every side, we can do the whole job.

The walk round

Before any ladder comes off the truck, we walk all the way round the house. We look up at what is hanging over the roof, which side has the most trees, where the small roofs are, and where each downspout goes into the ground. We look down for firm, level footing, beds to avoid, and anything fragile near the walls. This takes a few minutes and saves a lot of moving around later.

On the ladder

We set the ladder with a stand-off so it rests against the wall instead of the gutter lip, then start at the outlet end of each run so the drain hole is open first. Debris comes out by hand into a bucket and then a bag. Under Douglas fir and cedar, that means wet mats of needles; under maples in late fall, packed leaves; on a sunny open lot, mostly grit from the shingles. The bottom of the gutter gets scraped so the grit does not stay behind.

We work our way round the whole house, front, sides and back, moving the ladder as we go.

The work

On the job

Small roofs and outbuildings

Porches, bay windows, dormers and a carport or garage roof each have their own short gutter. They catch water and debris from the roof above them and fill faster than you would guess. We clean them on the same visit, along with any shed or garage you have added to the quote.

The flush and the tidy-up

Once every run is clear, we run a hose along each gutter and down each downspout and watch the water come out at the bottom. If one drains slowly, we work the blockage loose. If water backs up out of a buried pipe, we show you where; clearing underground lines is a job for a drainage contractor.

Then we pick up anything that dripped onto paths, decks or windowsills and check the beds under the eaves.

Before we leave

You get a quick summary, in person or by message: what came out, anything that looked loose or leaky, and anything worth keeping an eye on. Repairs are a separate decision for you. The gutter repair page covers what we can fix.

Got questions?

House gutter cleaning questions

How long does a house take?

A single-level home with a few trees is usually a short visit. A two-storey house under heavy fir, with a garage and several small roofs, takes a good deal longer. We give you a fair idea when we quote.

Do I need to move anything before you come?

Only things pushed right up against the walls where a ladder would stand: planters, patio chairs, a barbecue, a car under the eave. Everything else we work around.

What if it rains on the day?

Light rain does not stop a gutter clean; wet debris actually comes out in cleaner clumps. In a heavy storm or strong wind, we would rather move the visit and will contact you to rebook.

Do you take the debris away?

Yes, every time. It goes into bags as it comes out of the gutter and leaves in our truck. We do not empty it into your garden, a compost pile or the woods behind the house.

My house is a single-level rancher. Is it worth hiring someone?

A low roof is still a ladder job, and falls from a short height can do real harm. If climbing is not something you want to do, a one-storey house is a quick visit for us.

Can I add the gutters on my shed or garage?

Yes. Mention them when you ask for a quote and each one gets its own line. They often fill faster than the house because nobody looks at them.

How often should my house be done?

Most homes with a tree or two nearby need one visit a year after the fall leaves. Houses under fir or cedar usually need two. See gutter maintenance if you would like that handled for you.
