Serving Hilliers
Hilliers Gutter Cleaning for Inland Winters
Inland, away from the water, Hilliers gets colder nights than the beaches. A gutter left full of wet debris freezes there. We clear it and flush the downspouts before it can.

Hilliers is inland, west of Coombs, a scattering of rural homes and acreage off Highway 4 on the way toward the mountains. It is close to Parksville and Qualicum Beach on the map, but it does not share their weather. Away from the water, nights get colder, frost settles in earlier, and snow that melts by noon on the beach can sit on a Hilliers roof for a while.
For gutters, that changes the job from “keep the water moving” to “do not let the water stop in the first place”. A gutter that holds water in Hilliers runs the risk of holding ice.
What freezing does to a clogged gutter
A clean gutter drains between storms. Whatever water is left in it is a thin film, and a cold night does little harm. A clogged gutter is different. The mat of needles and leaves at the bottom acts like a sponge, and the trough above it stays partly full. When the temperature drops below freezing, all of that turns to ice.
Ice is heavy, and it expands. A run full of it pulls on its hangers and pushes on its seams. When it thaws during the day and freezes again at night, it works a little further into every joint each time. By spring, a gutter that went into winter full can come out with a sag, an open seam or a pulled hanger that a clean one would have avoided.

Downspouts are the weak point
The narrowest part of the system freezes first. If there is a wad of needles or a maple leaf stuck in a downspout elbow, water collects above it, and a cold snap turns that column into a solid plug. Downspouts that freeze full can split along their seams, and elbows can crack. Then the next rain has nowhere to go but over the top of the gutter.
So on a Hilliers job we spend extra time on the downspouts. We clear the outlet in the trough, flush each one, and watch the water run all the way out at the bottom. If something below grade is holding water back, we tell you. We do not clear underground lines.
Time the clean for fall
Here the timing matters more than it does on the coast. The best window is after the summer’s debris has built up but before the first real frost. That way the gutter goes into winter empty. On lots with maple or alder, a second visit after leaf fall clears the last load before the ground freezes.

Repairs after a hard winter
If last winter has already done its work, we can fix it. Split downspout sections, cracked elbows, bent gutter edges and loose hangers all fall under our gutter repair service. On houses under heavy tree cover, gutter guards can also help by keeping the bulk of the debris out of the trough.
Tell us how many buildings have gutters and what trees are nearby, and we will send a free quote. We also cover nearby Coombs and Errington.

Got questions?
Hilliers gutter questions
We have a shop and a barn as well as the house. Can you do them all in one visit?
Yes. Acreage properties often have gutters on several buildings. Tell us how many there are and roughly how big when you ask for a quote, and we will price them together and clean them on the same trip.
Can you clean gutters that are frozen?
Not properly. Ice locks the debris in place and makes the gutter edge slippery and brittle to work on. We would rather book on a day above freezing, which is another reason to get the clean done in fall.
Ice keeps forming along our eaves. Is that the gutters?
Partly, sometimes. A clogged gutter holds water that freezes, but ice building up along the roof edge can also come from heat escaping through the roof and melting snow higher up. We can make sure the gutters and downspouts drain. Roof insulation and ventilation are a question for a roofer.
Our downspout split over the winter. Can you fix it?
Yes. A split section or a cracked elbow can be replaced, and loose straps refastened. That falls under our gutter repair service, and we can quote it when we come to clean.
Snow slides off our metal roof in one go. Can that hurt the gutters?
It can. A slab of wet snow sliding off a metal roof can catch the front lip of the gutter on the way past, bending it outward or dragging hangers loose. When we clean, we check the lip and hangers along those eaves and point out any that have been pushed out of line. Straightening or rehanging them is gutter repair work. Snow guards on the roof itself are a question for a roofer.
